Chapter 7: Picking Up an Old Man

“Bro, slow down! Save some for me!”
Chen’s little sister hadn’t even swallowed her mouthful of fried rice before seeing Chen Mo stuffing a big piece of chicken in his mouth, grease dripping down his face.
“You’re such a pig!”
“What is this stuff? It’s too damn good!”
She had barely taken a bite, but the flavor practically elevated her soul.

Night fell. Outside, everything was quiet—pitch-black as far as the eye could see.
Back in his previous life, at this hour the city would be brightly lit…

Da Huang, the clingy mutt, stuck to Xiao Yu like glue.
They took a walk in the courtyard—partly to digest, partly to soak in the peaceful night of this unfamiliar world.

“Woof! Woof!”
Da Huang suddenly started barking like crazy. Xiao Yu snapped out of his thoughts and knelt to pat the dog.
“What’s wrong, Da Huang?”

“Woof! Woof!”
The dog barked and dashed toward the outer yard.
Xiao Yu frowned, but followed.
Could there be something out there?

People say cats are spiritual—can dogs be, too?
Could it be… ghosts?
Well, this is a fantasy world, so who knows?

A chill crept up his spine, but then he remembered—he was invincible here!
What was he afraid of?
He puffed his chest and strode ahead confidently.

Da Huang stopped at a spot and barked twice more.
Xiao Yu carefully followed the sound in the pitch-black darkness.
“Da Huang, is something there?”

“Woof…”
Nothing could be seen. Total darkness.

Then it hit him—what if “invincible” also meant he could bend the world to his will?
“Let there be light!”

Suddenly, a blinding flash of light illuminated everything.
“Holy—! My titanium eyes are burning!”

He shielded his eyes, heart pounding.
So that’s how invincibility worked… Word becomes law. Thought becomes reality.
That meant… wasn’t he basically a god here?

But there was no time to dwell on that now. In that brief flash of light, he had seen a person lying on the ground near Da Huang.

Could it be—like in novels—he stumbled upon a fallen fairy?
Excited, Xiao Yu rushed over to take a closer look.

Yep, it was a person!
But not a woman…

His face instantly darkened.
Damn it, other protagonists rescue gorgeous ladies, and I get an old fart?

The gap in treatment is insane!
Xiao Yu sighed mournfully, his fantasy scenario crumbling in real time.

He stood up and glanced from the unconscious old man to Da Huang.
“Da Huang, no food for you tomorrow!”

“Woof…”

In the end, he still brought the old man back to the inn—well, technically Da Huang dragged him back.
Thanks to Xiao Yu’s cooking, the dog had grown stronger and faster in the past few days.

Sometimes, Xiao Yu wondered—if Da Huang kept eating like this, would he actually become a demon beast someday?
The rise of the Dog Demon, perhaps?

He left the old man in the courtyard. Ground as a bed, sky as a blanket.
It wasn’t raining, and thanks to the system’s automatic cleaning, the yard was spotless.
Besides, Da Huang would keep him company—he was his rescuer, after all.

The real issue? There was nowhere else for him to sleep.
The guy wasn’t dead, just passed out.
But rooms at the inn required spirit stones—and without one, the system wouldn’t issue a key. Not even Xiao Yu, the “invincible boss,” could override that privacy feature.

He only had three spirit stones from his system cut, not enough for a room.
Couldn’t he let the guy crash in the lobby?

Nope.
He just didn’t want to. His dreams had been crushed.

He washed up and got ready for bed, determined to greet tomorrow with fresh energy.
“System, that mission—50 guests in five days—does it start tomorrow or today?”
Very important detail.

“Dear, it starts tomorrow~”
“Good. Night.”
Xiao Yu fell into a peaceful sleep.

Outside the Wild Forest
Xu Shaoyun led seven or eight young men and women along the path.

“Shaoyun-ge, is that magical inn you talked about really real?”

Xu Shaoyun grinned proudly.
“Of course! I broke through my cultivation realm thanks to that place!”

These were all close friends, and he wasn’t shy about sharing the secrets.
Now that school was on break, he brought them along to visit the inn.

“Shaoyun-ge, you said the owner is a powerful expert… or a spiritual chef?”
“A spiritual chef! That’s such an ancient profession!” a younger girl chimed in, her cheeks still plump with baby fat, hair in two adorable braids.

Xu Shaoyun gave her a warm smile.
“Even though the boss won’t admit it, I’m certain he’s a spiritual chef.”

“Is he really strong?” a tall, muscular boy asked.
“He might look normal, but I’d bet everything he’s ridiculously strong.”

“How strong? Stronger than your dad?”

Xu Shaoyun chuckled.
“My dad’s stronger, of course—he’s one of the only Martial Kings of the Divine Martial Empire!”

“Where am I?”
The old man slowly sat up, staring at Xiao Yu.

“You’re in the Wild Forest. I’m the owner of this place,” Xiao Yu replied.

The old man’s clothes were in tatters, soaked in blood—he looked just like a beggar.

“Owner?”
“Yep.”

He looked around, confused by his surroundings.

“May I ask your name, Owner?”
“Xiao.”

“What kind of business is this, Boss Xiao?”

Xiao Yu was speechless. Did this place not look like an inn?
He looked around—okay, fine. It looked more like a farmhouse.

“This is an inn. Or… think of it like a guesthouse.”

“A guesthouse?”
The old man looked stunned. His idea of a guesthouse was something in a bustling city—not like this.

“Alright, old man. You’re awake now. Time to move on. Don’t block my entrance—I’ve got a business to run.”

“Boss, I’d like to rent a room.”

Xiao Yu perked up.
Despite his rags and bloodstains, the guy didn’t talk like a beggar.
But whether he had money was another question.

Sensing Xiao Yu’s scepticism, the old man nodded confidently.
“Don’t worry, Boss. I’ve got money.”

“Xiao Bai, take the guest to his room!”

“Yes, Boss!”
Xiao Bai stepped out, wearing her usual pleasant smile.
“Right this way, guest!”

Then Xiao Yu waved a hand.
“Open the door!”

The large front gate creaked open automatically.

Just as the old man took a few steps, he suddenly froze.
That aura just now…

He turned to glance back at Xiao Yu, but the strange presence was completely gone.
Was it just his imagination?
